A Nightmare on Elm Street: a Horror Movie Essay Sample

There are three major categories that have wide appeal Romance, Comedy, and Horror. The romance, comedy and horror genres are the most popular in the movie industry. Wall Street Journal Doris Walsh says: Sometimes, you just want to feel more, to have your heart squeezed and get that rush of emotion that only these movies will give you.

Love and Basketball a well-known romance movie tops the charts: It is a story of an African- American male and female who grew up together and share a love for basketball. The passion, heartache, struggle and support the characters have for each other reminds people of their relationships. The second genre is comedy. The most popular comedy genres are Anarchic comedy, Romantic comedy and slap stick comedy. Anarchic comedy refers to a sub-genre comedy that uses stream of consciousness humor.

An anarchic film uses slapstick tendencies that tell a story, considered less physically violent. Slapstick genre incorporates physical comedy into the story. Using visual action, harmless violence, horseplay and depict humor.

Comedies give the opportunity to look at scenarios from a humorous perspective. Comedies although really entertaining use scenes that are unrealistic still are fun and enjoyable to watch play out. The third genre is Horror. Horror movies bring the same thrill seeking, danger and suspense to the viewer. Horror movies bring the same adrenaline rush of emotions from the characters to the audience.

Most people that have watched this movie would say that this film is one that will make a person, sleep with the lights on, keep the closet door closed, and the windows locked. Although this movie is a great example of a film that will make you want to keep the lights on when you go to bed, it is also a great example of a film that will make the watcher always remember the plot of the story. In this film, Freddy Krueger is like any other parent that lives in the quite little neighborhood on Elm Street until the other parents figure out that Krueger is the one who has been abducting local children and killing them with different forms of torture.

The other parents take matters into their own hands and burn Krueger alive, in a vow to the dark side Krueger gives up his soul and becomes a figment of our dreams that has a demon living inside of him. He claims his revenge on the descendents of those who murdered him in their sleep while they are dreaming, when they are most vulnerable.

What makes this movie so scary and unforgettable for most people is not because of the bloody scenes or the fact that there is demon, with knives for fingers, and a scared face that kills teens in their sleep; it is because Wes Craven made this movie to seem as real as possible. The parts about this movie that make it seem so real is that Krueger would kill his victims by making their worst fears come to life in their dreams.

For instance, his victims lie sleeping, their minds slip into what seems to be a seemingly illogical happening terrifying hallucinations that we experience in our dreams that make perfect sense at the time. Sleep Paralysis is a frightening form of paralysis that occurs when a person suddenly finds himself or herself unable to move for a few minutes, most often upon falling asleep.

Sleep Paralysis can be referred to as errors of the neural transmission in the brain during REM sleep. So in other words his victims would feel as if what was happing at that time was real but in fact they were sleeping and there was no way to wake them up until it was too late. Although this film does make a good example of a movie that will keep someone on the edge of their seat, sleep with the lights on, and never forget the horrible child murder that we all know as Freddy Krueger.
